How to change the default BACnet port (47808) in CAS BACnet Explorer

The CAS BACnet Explorer defaults to the standard BACnet port 47808 (0xBAC0). However, in complex building automation networks, IT requirements or multiple subnet architectures may require the use of a non-standard UDP port.

This guide explains how to modify the destination port settings within the explorer to ensure communication with BACnet IP devices operating on alternative ports.

How to Change the Default BACnet Port (47808)

Changing the port is done via the Settings Dialog. It is important to remember that BACnet ports are often represented in both Decimal and Hexadecimal formats:

  • Standard Port (Decimal): 47808
  • Standard Port (Hex): 0xBAC0
  • Common Alternatives: 47809 (0xBAC1) through 47823 (0xBACF)

Note: If you are capturing traffic with Wireshark on a non-standard port, you must also tell Wireshark to decode that port as BACnet. See our article: Monitor any port using any protocol with Wireshark.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Open CAS BACnet Explorer.
  2. Navigate to the Settings menu or click the Settings icon in the toolbar.
  3. Locate the BACnet IP configuration section.
  4. In the Port field, replace the default value (47808) with your desired port number.
  5. Click Save or Apply. The explorer will now send and listen for Who-Is/I-Am requests on the new port.

FAQ – BACnet Port Configuration

1) Why would I change the default port?

Multiple BACnet networks may exist on the same physical wire but stay logically separated by using different UDP ports.

2) Does this change the port on the device I am scanning?

No. This setting only changes what port the Explorer uses. The field device must already be configured to use the same port, or they will not communicate.

3) Can I use Hexadecimal values?

Most CAS tools prefer Decimal (47808), but always check if the input field specifies a "0x" prefix for Hex.
