The GREPEAT is a Level III dataline extender used in GE Lighting Total Lighting Control (TLC) systems. It functions as a dataline signal booster, allowing the total length of a TLC dataline to be extended beyond the standard maximum distance of 1,219 meters (4,000 feet). This enables reliable communication between lighting control panels and dataline devices in large or geographically dispersed installations.

GREPEAT devices are typically deployed in facilities where panels, switches, or controlled areas are spread across large floor plates, multiple buildings, or long cable runs that exceed normal dataline limits.

Planning for future system support: GE TLC is a legacy lighting control platform. Facilities that require long-term support, modern integration, or expanded functionality should consider migrating to GE LightSweep. Retrofit kits are available that allow existing TLC panels and wiring infrastructure to be transitioned to LightSweep without full panel replacement. Details are available on Chipkin’s LightSweep retrofit kits for legacy TLC panels page.

Purpose and Application

In a standard TLC installation, the dataline length is limited to approximately 1,219 meters (4,000 feet). The GREPEAT extender allows this limitation to be overcome by regenerating the dataline signal and passing it along to the next segment of the network.

By extending the dataline, GREPEAT enables lighting control panels and dataline-connected switches to remain part of a single logical system even when physical distances would otherwise prevent reliable communication. This makes it suitable for large buildings, campus-style facilities, and multi-office complexes.

Dataline Extension and Scaling

Each GREPEAT device extends the maximum dataline length by an additional 1,219 meters (4,000 feet). Multiple GREPEAT units can be installed in series to support very long dataline runs.

Aside from the TLC system limit of 500 total devices per dataline, there is no fixed limit on the number of dataline repeaters that may be used. This allows system designers to scale dataline networks to match the physical layout of the facility.

In addition to extending distance, the GREPEAT helps reduce signal degradation caused by noise and provides protection against electrical transients that can occur over long cable runs.

Operation and Diagnostics

System communications through a GREPEAT extender are automatic and transparent to the rest of the TLC system. Once installed, the device does not require configuration or programming to begin relaying dataline traffic.

Status LEDs on the GREPEAT provide visual confirmation of proper operation and assist technicians during installation and troubleshooting. These indicators make it easier to verify signal continuity and identify potential dataline issues in extended networks.

Use in Legacy TLC Systems

The GREPEAT Level III dataline extender is specific to the GE Lighting TLC architecture and is commonly found in legacy installations that require extended dataline coverage. It plays a key role in maintaining communication reliability across large or distributed TLC systems.

When maintaining or upgrading these systems, understanding where GREPEAT units are installed helps with troubleshooting communication faults and planning future system changes. In many cases, these locations are also important reference points when evaluating retrofit paths to newer lighting control platforms such as LightSweep.
