2025 Changes to Firmware Updates Notice

Beginning in 2025, QuickServer firmware updates transitioned to an encrypted and digitally signed .PKG firmware format. This change was introduced to improve firmware authenticity, integrity, and protection against unauthorized or accidental firmware modification.

The use of signed firmware ensures that only validated firmware images can be installed on supported devices. This helps reduce the risk of corrupted updates, unintended downgrades, or the installation of incompatible firmware images in operational environments.

This update aligns QuickServer firmware handling with modern security and lifecycle management practices commonly used in industrial and building automation systems.

Impact on Legacy QuickServer Devices (Pre-2025)

QuickServers manufactured and shipped prior to 2025 were originally designed to accept firmware updates in the legacy .SIMG format. These devices will continue to operate normally but require additional consideration when updating firmware.

  • Legacy QuickServers shipped before 2025 will only accept the original .SIMG firmware format by default.
  • A special transitional .SIMG firmware update is available that enables support for the newer .PKG firmware format.
  • Once a legacy QuickServer is upgraded to support .PKG firmware, it will no longer accept .SIMG files.
  • Performing a factory reset will restore the device to its original firmware handling behavior, including acceptance of .SIMG firmware if required.
  • After 2025, all newly released firmware versions will be provided exclusively in the .PKG format.

Customers maintaining mixed environments with both legacy and newer QuickServers should carefully plan firmware updates to ensure compatibility and minimize downtime.

QuickServers Built After 2025

QuickServers manufactured and shipped after 2025 are designed exclusively for the .PKG firmware format. These devices do not support the legacy .SIMG firmware format under any circumstances.

  • All QuickServers shipped after 2025 will only accept .PKG firmware images.
  • These devices cannot be downgraded to accept .SIMG firmware.
  • All future firmware updates for post-2025 devices will be delivered exclusively in .PKG format.

This approach simplifies firmware management, improves update reliability, and ensures consistent security controls across newer QuickServer platforms.

If you are unsure which firmware format applies to your device, please contact Chipkin support with the QuickServer model number and serial number so we can confirm the correct update path.
