Adoption of NEC Standards Across States
The National Electrical Code (NEC) is a widely adopted standard that governs electrical design, installation, and inspection practices across the United States. While the NEC is updated on a regular cycle, adoption is handled at the state and local level, which means different jurisdictions may enforce different editions at the same time.
The table below provides a snapshot of NEC adoption status by state as of mid-September 2017. It highlights which edition of the NEC was in effect, whether adoption of the 2017 NEC was underway at that time, and notes where older editions or local-only adoption applied.
This information is intended for historical reference and comparison. Always consult local authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs) or current state code publications to confirm the NEC edition that is currently enforced for permitting and inspections.
