Lonworks - What is the NodeUtil Lonworks Utility

The NodeUtil utility is a LonWorks network diagnostic and exploration tool used to examine LonWorks devices and networks when higher-level engineering tools or databases are not available. It is commonly used in situations where a LonWorks system must be analyzed or documented, but the LonMaker database or project files have not been provided.

NodeUtil allows engineers and technicians to directly interact with LonWorks networks at a low level. Using a compatible network interface—such as an Echelon U10 or U20 USB Network Interface—NodeUtil can communicate with devices on the network without requiring prior configuration data.

For organizations integrating or supporting LonWorks systems using gateways or protocol conversion solutions, NodeUtil is often used as an initial discovery and validation tool. For more information on LonWorks integration options, see our LonWorks Integration Gateways and Services page.

What Problems Does NodeUtil Solve?

In many LonWorks projects, access to the original network database is limited or unavailable. Without LonMaker or the appropriate project files, it can be difficult to understand how devices are configured or how they communicate on the network. NodeUtil addresses this by allowing direct inspection of network parameters and device information.

Using NodeUtil, it is possible to discover devices on the network and examine key LonWorks concepts such as domains, subnets, and node IDs. This information is essential for understanding network structure and for diagnosing communication issues or misconfigurations.

Required Hardware and Connectivity

To use NodeUtil, a LonWorks network interface is required. Commonly used interfaces include the Echelon U10 and U20 USB Network Interfaces, which allow a PC to connect directly to a LonWorks TP/FT-10 network. Once connected, NodeUtil communicates directly with network devices using standard LonWorks mechanisms.

Capabilities of the NodeUtil Utility

NodeUtil provides visibility into LonWorks network structure and device configuration. It can be used to discover devices, identify their addressing information, and query basic network parameters. This makes it useful during commissioning, troubleshooting, and retrofit projects.

One important feature of NodeUtil is the ability to upload XIF (External Interface File) data from LonWorks devices. XIF files describe the network variables and configuration properties supported by a device and are often required for integration, documentation, or gateway configuration.

Downloading NodeUtil

NodeUtil is provided by Echelon and is available as a free download. It can be obtained from Echelon’s software download section:

Related Utility: XIFDUMP

Another commonly used LonWorks utility is XIFDUMP. XIFDUMP is a command-line report generator that creates human-readable text reports from XIF files. These reports are useful for reviewing device interfaces and documenting supported network variables.

XIFDUMP is also available as a free download from Echelon, although registration is required. After registering, users can access the download from the “All Active Downloads” section:

FAQ

Do I need LonMaker to use NodeUtil?

No. NodeUtil can be used without LonMaker or a network database.

What information can NodeUtil discover?

It can discover devices, domains, subnets, node IDs, and retrieve XIF data from devices.

Is NodeUtil suitable for integration work?

Yes. It is often used to gather device information needed for gateways, protocol conversion, or system documentation.
